1,000,000 Children Each Year Are Victims Of Child Abuse
One of the most sobering facts about child abuse is that the incidents of it do not seem to be decreasing. In the United States alone, almost 1,000,000 children each year are victims of child abuse—and these are just the cases that have been documented. It is estimated that the actual numbers could be more than twice that high. Looking at statistical child abuse facts, you wonder how this kind of thing has been able to go on unchecked. When you consider the crime and the victims, however, the answer becomes clearer. All of the dismal facts about child abuse revolve around the idea that many of the victims either literally couldn’t speak up, or were too confused or afraid to.
Infants and toddlers – Infants account for a significant number of child abuse cases each year, which is one of the most frightening
facts about child abuse. A baby or a toddler can’t speak up about what is happening; their only hope is that someone notices and the abuse is reported. Unfortunately, people are often afraid to get involved.
Lack of apparent signs – Perhaps more incidents of child abuse would be reported if there were more outwardly visible signs of it happening, but often on the surface everything looks fine. Neglect is a major form of child abuse that can go undetected for months or even years, and in many tragic cases it is only recognized when it is too late.
Sexual abuse – One of the saddest facts about child abuse is that adults can so easily intimidate children into not talking. A lot of sexual abuse of children goes unreported because the children have been warned to keep quiet about it, lest they or someone they love be hurt. Young children are hard wired to believe what adults tell them, and normally this is necessary for survival. Unfortunately, abusers use this to their advantage.

The statistics on children born addicted to drugs are no less than those concerning children who are abused after birth. Though it’s often difficult to stop this from happening, it is at least easily recognized once the child is born, and then protective steps can be taken.
Facts about child abuse are frightening and dismal. One of the most important things that responsible people can do if they suspect that a child is being abused is report it. Nobody should ever be afraid of the consequences if they are wrong; suspected child abuse can be reported anonymously. The fact is that it really does take a village to raise a child, and we should all do the responsible thing when we suspect abuse.
